When One Person Sees Possibility Where Others See Poison

Artist John Sabraw stood on the banks of a southern Ohio stream and saw what most people would turn away from—water the color of rust and fire, stained toxic orange and red by abandoned coal mines that had been bleeding poison into the waterways for decades. One million gallons of polluted water was entering Sunday Creek every day. But where others saw devastation, John saw potential. He realized the vivid colors came from iron oxide—the same material used to make paint. Partnering with environmental engineer Guy Riefler, he developed a process to intercept the toxic water, neutralize it, and extract iron pigments while returning clean water to the streams—turning pollution into the stunning paints he now uses in his artwork.

John's dream goes beyond creating beautiful art: he's working toward building a pilot facility that can treat pollution while producing pigments that can be sold to offset operational costs—creating jobs in struggling coal communities while restoring watersheds. He started with little funding and plenty of skeptics. He started with polluted streams and an audacious idea. He started because he believed one person could see things differently, act on that vision, and create real change.
